Previously on LOST: Lost in Five Minutes (Seasons 1-5)

Share

LOST starts up again next week. I was excited, but not anxiously awaiting the return; however I decided to watch this 5 minute recap of the story so far, to see how detailed it was and now I want next week to be here so I can start watching again!!

The video has a lot of parts I had forgotten about, due to all the plot twists and changes. Even if you think you remember all of what's happened, check the video out and see if you do!

Yes, there are parts they left out, but they did have to fit it all into 5 minutes.

Visit the real-life floating mountains of Avatar; it's in China + Renamed peak to "Hallelujah Mountain"

Share

Do these two mountain pictures seem similar? Well, China wants you to think so, and they want you to visit it.

The Daily Telegraph reports:

"Tourism chiefs in central China have moved to cash in on the smash-hit popularity of James Cameron's sci-fi epic Avatar by renaming a peak the "Hallelujah Mountain" after the floating rocks in the film.

A 1,074-metre tall (3,523ft) column of rock in the Wulingyuan Scenic Zone in Hunan Province previously known as the Southern Sky Column was re-christened in a special ceremony this week involving hundreds of local people dressed in the region's ethnic Tujia costumes.

The park, a World Natural Heritage site, formed part of the inspiration for the floating mountains in the film, which this week officially become China's most popular film, grossing more than $100m at the box office."

I can definitely see the similarities. And James Cameron's designers have acknowledge the Chinese mountains as part of the inspiration for the floating mountains in the movie.

Finally: Avatar is now the #1 worldwide grossing film and breaks Titanic's Worldwide Record

Share
We knew this was going to happen eventually.

It's official: as of early Monday, January 25th 2010, Avatar grossed more revenue than James Cameron's former blockbuster movie Titanic.

Avatar hit $1.292 billion over the weekend, and the movie's distributor confirmed that Titanic's historic benchmark fell as of early Monday.

(And to anyone saying "What about inflation?" - No, it hasn't beat it that way, yet. And it also will never beat Gone With The Wind, which is valued at 6 Trillion after adjusting for inflation.)

Colonel Miles Quaritch is right - the Na'vi are hard to kill. And will be hard to kill in the box office for some time...

Scientist says real aliens (if discovered) may want to kill us.

Share

Via SciFiWire: Marek Kukula, public astronomer at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, reported to The Telegraph about her findings, quoted below.

"We might like to assume that if there is intelligent life out there it is wise and benevolent, but of course we have no evidence for this," said Kukula, who was attending "'The Detection of Extraterrestrial Life and the Consequences for Science and Society," a two-day conference held at the Royal Society in London.

"Given the consequences of contact may not be what we initially hoped for, then we need governments and the U.N. to get involved in any discussions."

So in other words, "They might not be friendly."

This doesn't surprise me. Aliens in scifi movies have wanted to kill us for a LONG time. Don't these scientists watch any scifi??

Battlestar Rhapsody - Battlestar Galactica song remake of Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen

Share

I hadn't heard this before, but I found it while searching for Caprica stuff (The show starts tonight with a repeat of the pilot episode). Somebody resung Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" but it's all Battlestar Galactica themed! (with a nod to Firefly too!)

Britian gives Avatar, District 9 award nominations.

Share

From SciFiWire:
"Apparently the Brits like Avatar just as much as everyone else giving out awards these days. The 3-D sci-fi epic scooped up eight nominations, including best film, from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in its Orange British Academy Film Awards. The South African sci-fi film District 9 also scored well, snagging seven awards.

Along with the BAFTA nomination for best film, Avatar got noms for James Cameron as best director, along with best music, cinematography, editing, production design, sound and special visual effects. While District 9 didn't grab a best film nomination, it nabbed noms for Neill Blomkamp as best director, along with best adapted screenplay, cinematography, editing, production design, sound and special visual effects.

The BAFTA awards will be given out in London on Feb. 21."

I wonder how Avatar will do in the British awards? Do you think Avatar will win more awards in the US or in the UK?

Milan Fashion: Versace taps into 'Tron,' 'Terminator' and Pink Floyd album covers

Share
Versace_Mens_AW10_RUNWAY

Versace, the famous fashion brand, revealed their latest threads at the Milan Fashion Week.

From the LATimes: "Explicitly drawing inspiration from "Tron" (yes, the 1982 Walt Disney film "Tron," why do you ask?), and William Gibson's 1984 novel "Neuromancer," (which popularized a now-familiar word of Gibson's coinage -- "cyberspace"), it seemed to be just as heavily influenced by "Terminator" and the dispersive prism album cover art of Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon." "

Yes, those clothes above are supposed to be the new fashion trends. I'm not too hip on wearing any of those myself, but clothes at Fashion Week are known for their very over-the-top looks.

What do you think: would you wear any of these?

Chuck beats Heroes in viewers, as Heroes drops to 3.93 Million

Share

Hiro won't be able to say this much longer...

Have you disliked the direction Heroes has went recently? Well, apparently it's not just you: it's also 2 million other TV watchers.

Yes, Heroes has gotten so bad 2 MILLION people stopped watching!

At the beginning of this season, Heroes was receiving  6 million viewers, and when the new episodes began airing this year: under 5 million.
Monday's episode sucked (if you've seen it, you probably agree) and drew under 4 million viewers.
The drop is viewership is clearly fans negatively responding to the horrible writing the show lost since the first season. I'm still a fan, but I'm not sure for how much longer.

Meanwhile, Chuck is averaging 7 Million viewers so far this season. Not even Subway can save Heroes now!

What George Lucas was REALLY thinking when he released the "Special" Edition of Star Wars IV: A New Hope

Share

College Humor rewrote the introduction crawl for the "special edition" of the first Star Wars movie, episode IV: A New Hope. This version features the changes in the movie, revealing what George Lucas was probably thinking in his head when he remade it for the re-release.

Kinda painful to see just how George screwed the movie up in the remake, but funny at the same time.

And just maybe...

Fox now wants to ruin Torchwood (U.S. Torchwood coming...)

Share

Will this theme song soon be coming to FOX?

Bad news: Fox (famous for killing Firefly, Dollhouse and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles—is developing a U.S. version of the hit Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood.

Possibly good news: Torchwood creator Russell T. Davies is writing the script for the pilot. And Captain Jack Harkness himself—John Barrowman—might star!

The Hollywood Reporter's Live Feed reportes:
Unlike U.S. adaptations that have gone awry, Torchwood fans can take comfort that the original producing team is on board. In addition to Davies, exec producers include Davies' producing partner Julie Gardner (former head of drama at BBC Wales for the show's first season) and Jane Tranter (another BBC vet, now exec VP programming and production at BBC Worldwide Prods. in the U.S.). Also, some of the current cast—most likely John Barrowman, who plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness—might star if Fox orders Torchwood to pilot.
I honestly don't think it has a chance, being on Fox and all. What do you think?

Joss Whedon closing the Dollhouse story for good. 'I wish I had figured some things out a little earlier.'

Share

Joss Whedon is closing the Dollhouse story for good. In an interview with Comic Book Resources, Whedon acknowledged the show could have used more work, but he doesn't regret how it turned out.

From the interview: "The only regrets I have about it are the things I didn't do right. 26 hours of television is a lot of time to tell story, and everybody involved was great. I just look back and go, 'I wish I had figured some things out a little earlier.' But that's all the time I have for regret. It is what it is."
In reference to the the possibility of a Dollhouse comic:
"I don't think it's a comic. It's a TV show...apparently not a Fox show, but it is a TV show. There are themes in it and ideas that could work in a comic, but for me to spend the amount of time it would take keeping the comic true to what's already out there when I'm already doing that with 'Buffy' would be a ridiculous waste of my time. And ultimately that would net me a piece of something that belongs to Fox. It just makes no sense to do a comic with 'Dollhouse.' I don't get it, and I'm not sure I'd read it."

It was a good run for Dollhouse; well, at least the best run Fox would have given it. Hopefully Joss goes to a different network next time.

James Cameron reveals plans for Avatar sequel: Following Jake and Neytiri

Share

Entertainment Weekly reports that James Cameron already has ideas on what he wants to do with a sequel to the hit movie "Avatar."

"I’ve had a storyline in mind from the start — there are even scenes in Avatar that I kept in because they lead to the sequel,” Cameron says. “It just makes sense to think of it as a two or three film arc, in terms of the business plan. The CG plants and trees and creatures and the musculo-skeletal rigging of the main characters — that all takes an enormous amount of time to create. It’d be a waste not to use it again.”

Sam Worthington also signed to play Jake Sully again, and he e-mailed EW some plot suggestions for the sequel: “Jake should have abused his avatar and be fat and unfit and demand Neyteri to get him a beer.”

And from MTV earlier, Cameron reported that the next film won't be a prequel, recounting previous backstory, but will begin after the events of the initial movie. "We'll follow Jake and Neytiri," he confirmed.
In fact, Cameron intends to follow the couple for another two films. "I have a trilogy-scaled arc of story right now, but I haven't really put any serious work into writing a script," he said.

Star Wars Burlesque: Sexy Darth Vader, Leia, C3PO, and other Tatooine-Styled Shenanigans at LA Nightclub

I can imagine this post might only interest some of the males out there, but a nightclub in LA decided to theme one of there burlesque shows with Star Wars. For those of you who've ever imagined a sexy female Darth Vader, to Female stormtroopers, and of course, Leah - the pictures will probably entertain.

From the article: "Saturday night, downtown club Bordello temporarily transformed itself into Mos Eisley Cantina for a night of Tatooine-styled shenanigans helmed by Devil's Playground. Star Wars Burlesque reimagined a host of beloved characters from the film series -- from the sexy to the androgynous to the grotesque -- as scantily clad female performers, with locals On Blast assuming the role of cantina band."

Firefly continuing through a new book of short stories

Share

Sci Fi Wire reports: Joss Whedon's world of Firefly and Serenity has passed it's time, but fans are still looking for more adventures. This demand is enough for Jane Espenson, who wrote one of Firefly's original TV episodes (Shindig), to contribute to a book that continues the story of the Serenity crew.

Jane Espenson's story will be centering on the characters of Kaylee and Wash (obviously set in a time period before the events of the movie Serenity).

"I'm writing a short story set in the Firefly universe that someone's putting together," Espenson said in an interview on Sunday in Pasadena, Calif., where she was promoting her upcoming Syfy series Caprica. "Titan Books is putting together a collection written by various of the Firefly writers. But [it's a] very short story, ... 2,000 words."
She added: "Oh, I just came up with a very clever little short story that involves Kaylee and Wash, two characters that we haven't seen together that much."

I'm pretty excited, although I've never been much of a fan personally for fan-fic. I know a lot of the Firefly/Serenity fans will eat this up though!

Fanmade Battlestar "The Plan" / Dollhouse mashup promo video

Share

If you can't wait until Battlestar Galactica: The Plan this Sunday on SyFy, or if you're a Dollhouse fan, someone on youtube made a promo video for "The Plan" that uses the Dollhouse opening style and music.

It's pretty well made, although not quite as interesting as the Dollhouse opening, imo.

Avatar sets opening record in China at 33.03 million yuan

Share

Avatar opened in China, and quickly became the most successful opening in the country's history.

Revenue from opening day in China was 33.03 million yuan (about $4.8 million).

Chinese website xinhuanet.com posted:
"BEIJING, Jan. 5 -- The highly anticipated 3D film Avatar opened Monday at midnight to some of the worst weather conditions to hit Beijing in half a century, but this did not appear to deter moviegoers. ... Cameron attended a promotional event for the film in Beijing on Dec 23 that catered specifically to the Chinese press. Heavy promotion across the country for Avatar, which included websites, magazines and television, seems to have had the desired effect."

With worldwide sales like this, it looks like Avatar will have little problems breaking Titanic's records.

George Lucas doesn't care if you like Star Wars: Interview from The Daily Show Jan, 5th

Share
Jon Stewart interviewed George Lucas last night on The Daily Show, and Lucas shows a lack of concern for fans of his work. On one hand, I understand that he has to just ignore the critics or he'd never be able to move on; but to not acknowledge the fans that are dedicated to his work seems a little disrespectful. Without those fans, people would care a lot less about Lucas' works and movies. Do you think Lucas was being disrespectful?

"It's a work of fiction. It's a metaphor. It's not real. And therefore, you can either like it or not like it. Whatever."

Watch the full video to see his other reactions.

Well, even though Lucas doesn't care, Jar Jar Binks was still a stupid idea for Star Wars.
I mean, I can't take a listen without wanting to erase every mention of the character from existence!

Serenity in your pocket? Awesome ship replica coming to your keychain

Share
This has to be the coolest keychain ever.

I want one right now. Unfortunately, I could only sign up for the mailing list.

From the company's post: "We’ve been working on this one for over a year now. If making a big Firefly replica is challenging, then making a small one is no less so, as you try to decide what details to keep, what to reject, and how to take a ship that in “real life” is over 269 feet long and shrink it – convincingly – down to two inches.
Cast is solid metal, the keychain has real heft to it. We used the studio CG effects files, shrunk down to a ridiculous extent, to capture the design, but obviously had to make many tweaks along the way. But our designers love a challenge, and we just couldn’t resist the idea of a Serenity that fits in your pocket and that you can carry around with you, where ever you go."

You can signup for alerts on when the keychain is available for purchase, or see more photos at the Link to the Company's site

Until then, I've got the theme song and the DVD series to keep me company.

Man buys Virtual Space Station in online game for $330,000

Share

Planet Calypso, formerly known as Project Entropia, has been known for a long time as the first major MMO with a real-time economy, where you can exchange real currency back and forth between the game and real life.

One of the users, known as "Buzz Erik Lightyear" paid $330,000 to own one of the best Space Stations in the game. This virtual real estate has no physical nor tangible component, it only exists inside the world of Planet Calypso.

Since you can charge other in-game players taxes and fees to visit locations, Buzz is probably going to try to make it a tourist destination, treating the purchase as an investment instead of a really large waste of money (although it probably still is).

Avatar rakes in $1 Billion in just 3 weeks, also breaks New Year's weekend Record

Share

Avatar continues to show strong box office sales, and Mashable added up the domestic and international sales to discover that in just 3 weeks, Avatar has earned over $1 Billion!

Avatar also had the strongest New Year's weekend ever with $68.3 million, beating the previous record holder Meet the Fockers.

I personally think it'd be cool to see a scifi movie achieve the highest grossing movie record. Are you going to see Avatar again, or are some of you still waiting to see it?

Dr. Horrible vs Capt. Jack Harkness for Gay Man Of The Decade

Share
Captain Jack Harkness vs Dr. Horrible

Apparently Neal Patrick Harris and John Borrowman are battling each other out to be named the Gay man of the Decade. Neal Patrick Harris plays the evil Dr. Horrible in Joss Whedons Sing Along Blog while John Borrowman plays the immortal Capt. Jack Harkness from the future in the Doctor Who spin off Torchwood. Both recently took fun jabs at each other via Twitter which you can read here and here

Its a tough one but I vote for Capt. Jack Harkness and here is why. He kicks ass, he is immortal and from the future.

Who would you vote for and why? You can vote here. Voting ends Sunday at midnight.

What Are Your Favorite Doctor Who Episodes?

Crave Magazine just listed their top 5 episodes which you can check out here. Picking my favorite is always hard as I love them all. If I had to pick some of my favorite they would be:
  • Blink
  • The Girl in the Fireplace
As Crave points out both of these were written by Stephen Moffat who will be taking the helm as the lead writer on Doctor Who which gives me great hopes for the next season.
Which are your favorite?
